The National Math Bee’s math game Batter Up is a fun, exciting and extremely effective tool to help elementary students achieve extraordinary levels of speed and accuracy with their math skills. The online math tournament is directed at students in first through sixth grade whom can compete in any or all of the four basic math categories, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. In its first year over 6200 participants from 17 states competed in the National Math Bee tournament. The tournament starts with two different levels of play: School, and State, which then lead into the final event, the National Math Bee Championship. The Championship was previously held each year at the McWane Science Center, a three story interactive science museum, which, like the National Math Bee, incorporates learning with fun. With your continued support, it’s our hope to bring back the onsite final tournament in the future.
The National Math Bee tournament has been correlated to both state and national academic standards including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, No Child Left Behind and others. Developers from CompuSage, inc., along with the National Math Bee team, have combined eLearning technology with children’s natural desire to play and compete in a way to effectively hone math skills. Participants compete online to develop skills and engage with concepts and skills. Our game was developed based highly on the Cognitive Load Theory which has driven a great deal of research to discover the capacities of memory and brain function. The research provides strong evidence that memorizing basic facts (like in math) can have a significantly positive impact on more complex, higher level performance. The better the memorization…the easier math will be later in life, at higher levels. We’ve seen it with thousands of kids! Many who are now PhDs!

The online National Math Bee tournament uses our Batter Up platform to test students' speed and accuracy in the four basic math modes, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The Batter Up tournament points system was developed and tested in the study "Automaticity of Basic Math Facts With a D&P ILS Using Various Grouping Combinations in Elementary School Classrooms" by Dr. S. David Vaillancourt.
