In times of crisis, fear, and quarantine, we need to guide our children to use their imagination and learning through fun.
During this time, while the WHO has recommended minimum contact with other people, our children are left with a sense of boredom. This boredom is something that as a 21st-century society we have encouraged unconsciously. We are accustomed to our time tables, schedules, daily activities and routines which leave very little time for children to use their imagination. In turn, when our children are left to fill much more of their own schedule with activities of their choice, we often hear the response, Ï’m bored!”
We have over-burdened our children with swimming classes, football practice, hockey practice, band practice, chess class, tutoring classes and so much more. While many of us are “lucky” enough to be able to provide these extracurricular activities to our children, unconsciously, we have created a huge problem. The problem that our children no longer have the imagination to entertain themselves, to use their imagination, their ideas and be resourceful. How can we steer our children towards efficient learning activities online while they are not at school?

Discovering a Pattern: One of the fundamental outcomes behind the Cognitive Load Theory and CompuSage’s BatterUp math game for primary students is discovering a pattern. When students discover the patterns behind the numbers they can proudly own that accomplishment.
Can repetition be fun?
Sequential Practice: Repetitive and sequential practices have long been proven to help students build their math skills as well as in other subjects. Once students see those results they will be in aw and more motivated to keep betting their skills. Finding repetitive educational games is key.
Recreational Mathematics: Kids need more than just a “this topic is useful” discussion to boost and inspire them to get involved. One of the best ways to motivate is finding a FUN resource to integrate into the learning process. The BatterUp math game is a great tool to do just that!
Fun doesn’t mean easy.
Practice Makes Perfect: Such an over-used slogan but true in the math sense. While practicing all things does not bring about “perfection,” frequent and repetitive practice in mathematics will help learners attain the skills and knowledge to handle much more complicated math problems. In scientific research, it has been shown without exception, every student group who used the BatterUp software demonstrated a significant increase in their math skills.?
Where can I find efficient but FUN learning resources?
The National Math Bee has done it’s very best to package these fundamentals into a FUN recreational way to help students develop their skills in the four basic math categories. It’s a great way to figure out where your students have a void in mathematical knowledge and help them to overcome it. The best thing about it is that children can participate in school and at home!
BatterUp players move through different leagues of competition by mastering “fact sets” with specified speed and accuracy requirements for each “fact set,” The leagues start at little league with easiest “fact sets” then moving upward to solving harder “fact sets,” up to the 12s. The only way to move up to a higher league with harder math facts is to master the lower level sets. This can be accomplished by regular practice within a shorter time period.
If your child is not currently enrolled, now is a great time to get them started. The National Math Bee runs through the end of May. We are currently in the state phase where students in the same grade and state are competing against one another for the highest Batting Average. Registration is free and only takes a few minutes.
For teachers who already have their students signed up, encourage them to practice at home if they have the means to do so. It’s not HOMEWORK. It’s FUN WORK!!
